If a person is in the bathroom brushing and flossing at least twice a day, they are likely to be washing their hands and face more often as well. Simply washing and cleaning the body helps to avoid different germs and bacteria contracted throughout daily life.

In this day and age, people are living longer and longer, which is fantastic news for us all! Human advances in medicine and other pertinent areas have extended the average lifespan for humans to 77.2 years!

A longer lifespan is great news for us all, yet as we get older, it's typical to experience a variety of aged-related problems. While living longer is our goal, I think we all agree we can do without the physical aging part. What can be done to combat the aging process?

Zinc and Calcium: These are the two most important minerals in your diet! Calcium can be found in dairy foods, and green, leafy vegetables. Calcium is crucial for preventing osteoporosis! Zinc can be found in meats and shellfish, which help to keep the immune system strong.

B Vitamins: B vitamins help to maintain our energy and keep our nerves and brain healthy. You can find B vitamins in leafy greens, potatoes, bananas, meats, and legumes.

When you think of fitness, you may be thinking of well-toned bodies, rock-hard abs and generally, just a fit and outstanding physique. What if I told you that in order to be truly fit and feel great you don’t need to be a body builder?

Fitness is more than exercise. If you think exercise and weight control are all there is to fitness, you may be surprised! Fitness is a lifelong pursuit, not a short term goal. "Physical fitness is defined as "a set of attributes that people have or achieve that relates to the ability to perform physical activity" (USDHHS, 1996).

In fact, physical fitness is made up of five main components: cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, body composition and flexibility.

An interesting quote I came across is this: "The biggest obstacle people face in achieving physical and financial fitness is developing consistent and long-term healthy habits." This came from Countrywide Bank Managing Director, Pierre Habis. Interestingly, it points up the fact that anything worth achieving should become a mindset based on a long term goal. Add anything that is worth while achieving to your regular life routine.

In general, physical fitness is the ability to do daily activities without feeling overly tired. Physical fitness is especially beneficial in preventing coronary heart disease and cardiovascular disease, enhancing muscle quality, preventing muscular deterioration and reducing depression.

You see, true fitness is everything from proper sleep to proper nutrition, from stress reduction to weight reduction, and from flexibility to balance to relaxation. Being physically well toned and muscular does not mean you’re healthy.

Diet and exercise work together for your body's best interest. That’s because nutrition and physical activity go together like bread and butter for our bodies. Dieting alone is not going to be able to give you all of these health benefits. You need to have the physical part as well. Exercise will aid in digestion, provide strength and endurance, and does wonders for the heart.

You will soon start feeling the benefits!

When you start any type fitness plan it is recommended that you talk to your doctor about it first. He may work out a specific exercise plan with you that is best suited for your particular physical needs. Be sure to discuss with your doctor any special health concerns like blood pressure, hypertension and any special diet needs that you may have.

It just cannot be stressed enough how the combination of a healthy diet and exercise plan will do wonders for your overall well being. It will make you feel good mentally, emotionally, as well as physically!

voluptuous, round women and sweaty, husky men stood in rows, shoulder to shoulder, jammed into what was normally considered the "aerobics" room. The only exit was a small glass door in the back corner so anyone who dared to enter was stuck in a crowded room to jump-start their new years resolutions. Sweat poured as my mother shouted commands at the crowd of the throng of men and women in colorful spandex.

That is a mental picture of what I remember from the late 1980s when my mother was an aerobics instructor. I was left to fend for myself in the children's room and watch Nickelodeon while she would teach the sweating masses how to use a step bench. The classes held right after New Years Eve were not only the most crowded, they were also the most entertaining. I watched in amazement in the 1980s and I am still amazed to this day what people will do to lose weight. What is more shocking is how people who want to lose weight will allow their dreams and resolutions burn out quicker than a cherry bomb on New Years Eve. Days would pass and the classes would dwindle down with only the regulars left over, still maintaining their already svelte physiques and a few men occasionally joining in for a 15-minute abdominal work-out.

No one should let their resolutions die like those huffing and puffing patrons in the back of the aerobics room in the 80s. With all the diet and exercise hype surrounding us as we approach 2008, is it logical to assume that losing weight shouldn't be so complicated? Diet and exercise plans can be impractical and overwhelming, causing people to lose faith and motivation. Want to lose 10 pounds in a week? What ever your reason is I am here to tell you that it is possible and the great thing is you will not have to starve yourself.

The plain and simple fact of the matter is, if you plan on losing weight then you just need to burn more calories than you take in. However, there are other little tips and tricks that I have that will help you burn more fat off and hopefully help you to drop off that excess weight so you can fit into that bathing suit, dress or for the guys – those new slacks.

The first thing that you should start doing is drinking more water. You will notice a huge difference if the majority of fluids you drink is soda or coffee. Your body is very smart, so if you are not drinking a lot of water it will retain water, hence that bloated feeling you get and that extra layer of water weight around your waistline. Get ample water and make sure you are not carrying that excess water weight with you. Keeping hydrated is also a key factor if you intend on exercising to lose weight.

Eat smaller more frequent meals to shoot your metabolism through the roof. Much like your body retaining water if it is not getting enough of it, your body’s metabolism will go into conservation mode if you are only eating a few large meals a day. Are you always rushing out of the house in the morning and skipping breakfast? Are you only eating a large lunch and dinner? If you are, my guess is you have trouble losing weight. The reason is because your body slows your metabolism down because it knows you are only eating twice a day. Eating five to six smaller meals a day will have the exact opposite effect and will have you burning fat faster.

Pump up your cardio work. How do you do this? By making small changes in your daily routine. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, park in a stall further away and get the extra walking in, go for a walk on your lunch break. Also, get some time in the morning or afternoon for 20-30 minutes of cardio work. Whether that be walking, jogging, running or biking, make sure to get yourself going and burning extra calories. Working out in the morning on an empty stomach also has a great effect, as it burns fat faster.

Following these three tips will give you the best chance at losing weight as quickly as possible. If you want to lose 10 pounds in a week, just be smart about it and do not sacrifice your health by going on a crash diet or popping fat burners for the sake of vanity. Take the right steps and you will be slipping into that new dress or slacks in no time!

You've probably heard of the cabbage soup diet, or the ice cream diet, or even the raw foods diet, and wondered do they work? Can you lose weight by sticking to a fad diet even if at first you think it's silly? The answer is yes.

Proponents of the raw foods diet say it's eating back to nature as humans were intended. The diet works because fats, other than through vegetables such as avocadoes, or seeds and nuts are virtually eliminated.

Pick up any woman's lifestyle magazine these days and you'll probably see another fad diet. There are several reasons fad diets work, even if only in the short term. When you become aware of what you're eating the tendency is to restrict the amount as well as the kinds of foods. The tomato and cheese diet might allow all the tomatoes and cheese you can eat, but eventually, one or two tomatoes are quite enough thank you.

There is some scientific support that certain fad diets do work. For the longest time the grapefruit diet was credited for weight loss only because calories were severely limited to less than 1000 per day. It turns out however, that there is a fat burning enzyme in grapefruit that helps you lose weight faster. Scripps Clinic of San Diego put 100 obese patients on three diets: One third of the patients had a grapefruit before every meal. One third drank a glass of grapefruit juice before every meal, and one group was instructed not to eat or drink grapefruit or grapefruit juice. The two groups that consumed either the grapefruit or the juice lost more weight than the third group.

Some diets rely heavily on fruits and vegetables which are up to 90% water. Eating 1000 calories worth of apples means you have to eat at least 10 medium apples. Eating 1000 calories worth of a McDonald's Big Mac means eating lunch. The fiber in the fruits in vegetables are filling, bulky and take quite a bit of time to digest.

Weight Training Tips To Tone Your Body, Build Muscle Quickly, And Melt Away Fat

Weight training can be a fun and energizing way to maintain strength, lose weight, and keep a healthy, good-looking body. Listed below are a few tips on setting up a great muscle-building, fat-burning workout.

The 640+ muscles of the body are divided into upper body muscles and lower body muscles. The upper body has a greater number of muscles but they are smaller than those of the lower body. The largest muscles are contained in the lower body and subsequently, there are fewer of them.

To work each group properly for maximum results, we need to work them a little differently. Let me explain. An “exercise” is a series of movements that either pushes or pulls a weight through a range of motion. A “repetition” is one complete movement through that particular exercise. A “set” is a grouping of repetitions. So, each exercise is done in repetitions which are part of a set. You can work each of the muscle groups one at a time, doing one set per group, and rest for 30-60 seconds before repeating the routine. This series is called a “circuit.”

While all sets of exercise will be done in repetitions, the amount of repetitions and sets can change. For best results, each body part should be exercised 2-3 times a week but NEVER on consecutive days. The muscles require at least 24-48 hours of recovery time for optimal performance.

Upper body muscles need to be trained at 8-15 repetitions per set for a total of 2-3 sets. Lower body muscles are trained at 8-15 repetitions per set for a total of 3-4 sets. Circuits can be repeated 3-4 times. The lower body muscles are worked harder because they are larger and can adapt to a higher load more rapidly than the upper body muscles.

To set a good training weight load, men should do 75% of the absolute maximum that they can handle for 1-3 repetitions in each exercise. Women should only use a weight that is approximately 60% of her maximum.

It’s really hard to overtrain your abdominal muscles since you use them all day in twisting, turning, and other torso movements. So, your abdominal muscles can be worked 4-7 times per week. Studies have shown that using a variety of crunching exercises is the best workout for the abdominal muscles. Do the 10 Crunch Variations listed and you’ll have rock-hard abdominals. Do 1-2 sets of 10 repetitions for each of the 10 crunches and you’ll hit every abdominal muscle. Remember to focus on proper form and the intensity of the exercise instead of the number of repetitions or sets. You will definitely feel a "burn" in the abdominal muscles on each set. Keeping your arms crossed on your chest with your hands on the opposite shoulder, you should lift only your head and shoulders up off the floor. This technique will not cause the typical pain in your neck or back.

Stretching is extremely important, both before and after a workout. It avoids injury and helps release toxins caused by the stress of working out. So make sure that you stretch to keep from aching after a workout and you’ll increase the likelihood that you’ll be back for more.

Below is a list of the most common exercises used to tone and strengthen each muscle group. Start out slowly using 1-2 exercises each for the various muscles. As you progress, add more exercises for variety and challenge.

Legs/Buttocks: Squats, Lunges, Leg press, Leg extensions, Leg lifts, Leg curls, Calf raises

Abdominals: Abdominal crunches in all 10 variations, Abdominal flexor machine, Leg lifts, Leg scissors

1. Knees bent, feet flat on floor

3. Legs at 90o to body, knees bent, calves parallel to floor

6. Legs at 90o to body, toes pointing to ceiling with legs spread wide

7. Left leg straight and held 3” off ground, right leg bent to chest

Living Healthy By Eating Nuts

It wasn’t very long ago that nuts were feared. – They were considered a dieting disaster, with far too high a fat and calorie content to be anything but bad for you! Recently though, extensive studies have shown that the opposite is actually the case. – Nuts are incredible for the human body. Recently there have been many health discoveries showing that nuts are a wonderful protein source that are great for everyone, and should be added to our diets.

While it’s true that nuts are very fatty and have a highly concentrated calorie content with roughly 200 kilocalories per ounce, they aren’t nearly as fattening as they seem. A vast majority of the fat in nuts is either monounsaturated or polyunsaturated. These fats aren’t as detrimental to weight gain to others, and more importantly, they have the ability to lower LDL cholesterol. This is very important considering today’s push for cardiovascular-friendly foods, and as it turns out, nuts seem to have a very positive impact on the heart. Many studies have been done in recent years concerning nuts and their effect on the heart, and the general consensus is that a diet consisting of regular nut intake can lower your chance for heart disease by as much as 35%.

Nuts are plentiful sources of protein. Proteins are necessary for the body’s day-to-day function, and are also difficult to obtain in a vegetarian diet, because most plants only contain pieces of proteins. Nuts, however, are sources of complete proteins, making them a wonderful addition to vegetarian diet, but also ideal for a cardiovascular-minded diet. Unlike meats and other conventional producers of protein, nuts are actually beneficial for the heart instead of being damaging.

Nuts are terrific sources of energy. Protein is an important ingredient for energy, and when combined with the other minerals in nuts make them perfect for providing longer, more constant energy levels. In addition to proteins, nuts also happen to rich in the powerful antioxidants selenium and vitamin E. Anti-oxidants have recently been identified as having powerful anti-aging effects on the body due to their ability to block the damage caused by free-radicals, substances that contribute to early aging.

Research has indicated that while almost all nuts have similar benefits on the body, the ones regarded as the most beneficial are almonds, cashews and peanuts. These studies suggest that 1-2 ounces a day is a good, moderate serving in which the body will receive the greatest benefits. Nuts, while they are healthy, can be an addictive food, and because they do contain a good bit of calories, one must make sure that they keep in check just how many they eat. Fortunately for everyone, nuts are great at satisfying hunger.

Knowledge about these tasty little snacks has morphed immensely over the years as research has shown that nuts are actually good for us. By adding a small serving of nuts to your daily life, you can help improve your health and well being immensely. – Especially the health of your most important organ, the heart. Keep in mind that nuts still are considered a high calorie food, and that instead of adding them to your diet, it’s best to substitute them for another, less healthy food instead. Nuts used to be considered a food that everybody should avoid, but with extensive research and a growing knowledge of nutrition, we’ve come to learn that in actuality, everyone should be eating them as long as they don’t go overboard!

The best way to discipline your way to healthy loss, weight control, and body toning is to withhold any perks until you perform your required regimen for the day; on the other hand,
rewarding yourself after a workout is good reinforcement method towards achieving your goal.
