Body Fat Raises Cancer Risk

New research findings show that extra body fat doesn't just weigh you down. Scientists now have evidence that too many fat cells prompt ongoing reactions in the body that may increase cancer risk.

A recent study in the Department of Epidemiology at Johns Hopkins University found excess fat may alter the body's basic functioning in ways that raise risk for cancer and other diseases.

Research had already shown that obesity boosts levels of hormones such as estrogen, for example, which increase risk for breast cancer in post-menopausal women. Too much body fat, especially in the abdomen, also increases insulin resistance, priming the body for diabetes.

Now, recent findings suggest that fat deposits especially around the waist, may influence the body's inflammatory response so that risk for colon cancer is higher.

Inflammation is the body's first response to infection or injury. It's essential to healing, but it can go the other way. Researchers now suspect that chronic low-level inflammation of body tissues underlies a lot of disease processes. How does this happen?

There are substances called cytokines that are part of the body's inflammation response to help with fighting infection and healing wounds. Cytokines are made by white blood cells, but fat cells can make cytokines too.

These substances also help with wound repair by stimulating tissue growth. Research suggests that when the body has an oversupply of fat cells, those cells release too many cytokines. This boosts the body's inflammatory response and causes damage to cells and their DNA."

Where there is genetic damage plus stimulation for cells to grow, the chance of cells growing out of control and becoming cancer is increased. We all have cancer in our body at all times. The role of the immune system is to fight those cancer cells. However, when the immune system is working overtime dealing with the cleaning out of the fat in the system, it doesn’t have enough resources to fight the cancer cells.

A previous study showed that people who were obese, 30% over their normal body weight had a higher risk of colon cancer. People who were diabetic had increased risk.

Some cancers are known to be associated with persistent inflammation that's related to chronic infection. For example, people infected with one of the viruses that cause hepatitis are more susceptible to liver cancer. People with inflammatory bowel disease have above-average rates of colon cancer.

The idea that fat cells could be actively involved in promoting inflammation is a relatively new one. "There is more to being fat than carrying around excess weight. People should begin thinking of excess body fat as actively harmful to their health." When you study the human body, even as remotely as the way it is taught in schools, it stands to reason that excess fat is not a natural condition for the body. Excess fat will strain all the systems, being digestive, respiratory, the skeleton, etc.

The good news is that excess weight can be managed. Even walking every day as little as outside of the house and around the block, is a great starting point to healing, by sending a message of health to the brain and the body.

However, try to choose good calories such as protein and complex carbohydrate. Calories from fats and alcohol do not count.

2) Up Protein Consumption - Proteins are muscle builders. You must make sure that you consume enough protein. You should consume about one gram of protein per pound of your body weight everyday if you want to build muscle mass fast. If you don't get enough protein, your muscles won't grow since you are not feeding them.

3) Health Supplements - Many people erroneously think that they do not need to take supplement to build muscles or supplements are not good for health. Hey, health supplements are food for your body and if chosen correctly, they can help you to build muscles faster.

If you have a pre-existing condition that carries high risks for your insurance company, you may have trouble finding an affordable health plan. In fact, companies are not forced to insure you. If you are too risky, they can reject your application.

More than half of all insured people get their insurance from their companies. Group insurance plans reduce risk by sharing the cost equally. But, what if you can't get into a group plan?

States offer a type of health plan called "risk pools." Risk pools are intended to provide insurance to the uninsurable.

What Is A Risk Pool?

First, let's look at how group insurance works. Even risky individuals can be covered under group health insurance at little cost to insurance companies because everyone shares expenses and risks. When the company has to shell out extra for claims made by a certain individual, the rate of the whole group goes up.

With individual health plans, there is no group. It's just you. So, private insurance companies look at your medical history and risks. This is what determines your rate.

A risk pool is like a group of all the people within a certain state who can't get private insurance because of pre-existing conditions and other health risks. It works in much the same way as group insurance does, except that the group in this case is not the company, but all the individuals in the state who can't get insured.

Because they are obviously risky, risk pools cost more than regular insurance. This is not a government support program like Medicare or Medicaid aimed at low-income earners. Risk pools are usually quite expensive.

Does My State Have A Risk Pool?

Not every state offers risk pools, but most do. There are risk pools in Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin, West Virginia and Wyoming.

Each state's risk pool varies. You definitely have to be a resident of the state in which you apply. Other than that, the requirements are different in each state. In order to qualify, they may require that you prove that you've been rejected by an insurance provider because of a high health risk.

In most states, you can't get a risk pool health plan if you qualify for Medicare or Medicaid. Some states also have an enrollment cap, meaning that they will only accept a certain number of applicants to the program each year.

Risk pools are operated by non-profit healthcare organizations. Currently, almost 200,000 people are enrolled in risk pools, which is not a large number if you consider how many Americans are uninsured. Some states, like Tennessee, are starting to have special programs for kids and specific diseases like diabetes.

Risk pools are convenient for individuals who are having trouble getting insured. You can take out a short-term plan to cover a gap in your employment or insurance.

If you have a pre-existing condition that puts you at high risk, you may feel like you should stick with your group plan so that you can stay covered.

This might mean staying at a lousy job that you would just as soon ditch otherwise. Risk pools offer you more choices for your health insurance coverage.

Tip 4: Determine Exactly How Many Calories You Need

[Daily Caloric Need] = [Body Weight in lbs.] x 15 + ([moderate activity in minutes a day] x 3.5)

Since you wish to lose weight, your target = [Daily Caloric Need] - 500 cal

For example, if you weigh 160 lbs and you achieve 20 minutes of moderate activity every day:

You Daily Caloric Need in this example would equal (160 x 15) + (20 x 3.5) = 2400 + 70 = 2470 cal.

Subtract 500 calories from that total; 2470 - 500 = 1970 cal.

Therefore 1970 cal is your daily caloric intake goal for losing 1 lb per week!

Tip 5: Eat Raw, Whole, Organic Foods

If possible, purchase only fresh foods and avoid all processed and convenient foods such as fast food. Packaged and processed foods are often much higher in sodium and fat content, and contain less nutritional value.

You’ve heard it from your personal trainer, you’ve heard it from your mother, and every summer during a heat wave, you probably heard it repeatedly from various media outlets: you need to drink more water. As much fun as it is to debunk myths, this particular maxim is all too true.

Your body is composed of over 70% water, and it constantly needs to refill its supply. “But,” you say to yourself, “I drink enough water to keep from getting too thirsty. Isn’t that enough?” Not necessarily. If you are serious about your fitness goals, you should be conscious of how much water you drink for a number of reasons.

For those looking to lose fat, proper water intake can actually help you metabolize fat better. If you are chronically dehydrated, you body will actually work to keep fat into to draw on its moisture. When there’s plenty of water to go around inside your body, your fats cells are more likely to be burned off, because your body doesn’t have any more use for them.

This might seem counter-intuitive, but not drinking enough water can actually lead to water retention. When you body senses that too water is coming in, it works to store and conserve every last millimeter that it can. When your body gets in this state drinking some water immediately saved as much as possible in your body. To break your system of this, you should down as much water as possible, causing your body to evacuate all excess water.

Dehydration is also a major culprit in causing your internal organs to not work at they peak level. The kidneys and liver in particular need a great deal of water to function properly. If you're smart, you will include your doctor in the dieting process. They have more to offer than almost any other profession.

Vegetables and Fruits

Vegetables and fruits should be the major chunk of the food you eat in a day. They are very rich in nutrients. They would give your body the much needed minerals and vitamins it requires. It doesn’t really matter if they are fresh or frozen. The fact that they are eaten is enough. Eating lots of salads is one of the best ways to consume them. They would taste better that way with say olive oil mixed with lemon and some pepper.

You can start using toothpaste when your child is as young as 12 months. Schedule regular appointments with your dentist for checkups, teeth cleaning and periodontal evaluations. Check your child’s mouth regularly and look for the presence of any symptoms of periodontal disease including bright red and swollen gums, bleeding gums, bad breath and gums that are receding from the teeth.

Work with your child towards improving his poor oral health habits. Being a role model and practicing what you preach will encourage to look after his dental hygiene more than any other strategy you may use.

A word of precaution; an advanced form of periodontal disease may be an early sign of a prevailing systemic disease and would require immediate medical attention. If your child exhibits any of the symptoms of severe and persistent periodontitis that is resistant to therapy, a medical evaluation and medical treatment is a must.

Children who eat a lot of sugary foods including cookies, candy or raisins or drink a lot of sweet drinks including sodas or sweetened drinks are at a higher risk of getting cavities. This soybean oil is noted to negatively affect the thyroid function resulting in feeling sluggish, a decrease in energy and reluctance to want to exercise.

How much trans fat is bad? When you find out something can lead to heart disease and obesity, I wouldn’t take any chances and I would avoid any of it at all costs. Some reports have shown that .5g of trans fat is equal to approximately 1.5g of unsaturated fat in terms of how it affects your health. You won’t see this in the label of many products as .5 g can still be labeled as 0% trans fat due to federal law. But when you scroll down the ingredients, you might come across partially hydrogenated oil present in the first few lines.

The best way to avoid trans fat is to read your labels thoroughly. Avoid grocery shopping in the middle aisles for food and stay on the outskirts of the store where the fresh produce, dairy and meat are located. When cooking, choose to cook with virgin coconut oil, although high in saturated fat, and low on many health food lists, it is unaffected by heat, and it is metabolized differently than other oils as it will be burned as fuel and not stored into the fat cells. Fats are extremely important to our diet, but you can make healthy choices about fats by reading labels and learning about the different types of fats and how they affect the body.
